Some 75 local high schoolers are serving as interns this summer in a highly selective work-based learning program offered by the Boeing Co. at its Huntington Beach campus.

The students, who will be seniors next year at 13 schools throughout Southern California, are being paired with some of the brightest minds in engineering, aerospace and computer science through Boeing’s 2019 Summer High School Internship Program.

The goal is to leverage mentorships to introduce STEM-minded scholars to new skills and potential careers. The students, selected through a rigorous application and review process, will have the chance to participate in special projects, trainings and presentations.

A half-dozen students from Tustin High’s T-Tech Academy have been selected to participate in Boeing’s 2019 Summer High School Internship Program. From left are Jonathan Marshall, Natalia Murrietta, America Garcia, Anaka Mahesh, Ivy Dang and Dhaval Vora.

We’re told Boeing seeks out high schools that have specific math, science and technology programs, like Tustin High’s T-Tech Academy, which sent a total of six students this year. The Tustin contingent includes Ivy Dang, America Garcia, Anaka Mahesh, Jonathan Marshall, Natalia Murrietta and Dhaval Vora.

“As much as I strive to teach my students all that I can, there are certain things that you just can’t teach in school,” said T-Tech Academy Director Ed Hernandez. “As a Boeing intern, my students get to experience the ‘real world’ of engineering, science and technology with highly skilled professionals in one of the world’s best technology companies.”

Tustin High has participated in the Boeing Co. program each of the last six years, sending about 40 students. Many have gone on to graduate from top colleges and universities.

Other Southern California campuses participating include Brea Olinda High School, California Academy of Math and Science, Diamond Bar High, Fairmont Preparatory Academy, Ocean View High School, Orange Lutheran High School, Sage Hill School, Sunny Hills High School, Troy High School, Valencia High School, Westminster High School and Whitney High School.

The Boeing Summer High School Internship Program will continue through Aug. 9.
